Being Thankful
I’m trying to be more thankful in my life.
When my mother passed away, I struggled with guilt over things like not having spent enough time with her or not having messaged or called her when I felt the urge to.
I realized I could spiral downward by dwelling on this, or could I choose to become and do better. I learned, from everyone who reached out to share a story about Mom, that she had touched many people by being involved in their lives in different ways.

I decided that if I really wanted to honour Mom in my life, the best way to do that was to leave behind the negativity and selfishness I’m prone to. Instead, I needed to focus on valuing where I’m at in life instead of where I wished I was and to being thankful for the people in my life.
So, I’m far from perfect, but I’m focused on growth — spending more time with my kids, listening more to my wife, learning how to love better.
It’s a shame that it is tragedies that bring these realizations, but it’s a further shame if we don’t learn from them.
What have you learned from a difficult time or challenge that helped you become a better person?
