My 3 Best Essential Oils for Allergies

Allergy season is upon us!

If you’re anything like me, the spring season, while beautiful and welcomed after winter, brings with it a host of things that make my nose run like a waterfall. It’s not unusual for me to spend two or three weeks in May with an allergy attack that turns into some kind of a sinus or head cold.

Thankfully, there are a few essential oils I use to help me with this.

I will either diffuse these oils, or apply them directly to the outside of my nose, sinus area, or head. (Note: Some essential oils can be strong, and can feel like they are burning your skin. If you apply directly to your skin, mix them with a little of a carrier oil like a fractionated coconut oil before applying them.)

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is native to Australia but now grown in many other places. It’s been used for medicinal, fragrance, antiseptic, and even flavouring purposes throughout history. The oil is distilled from the leaves of the plant.

I use eucalyptus oil especially when my nose is feeling plugged. I take the bottle, hold it under each nostril, and breathe in deeply several times. I will also put a few drops of the oil, mixed with carrier oil, on my chest and nose at bedtime. Then, I set up my diffuser and diffuse eucalyptus overnight. This helps me breathe better while I sleep.

Frankincense

Frankincense is actually a resin that comes from trees in the Burseraceae family. It is noted for being fragrant and was often used in perfumes and other such fragrant products. Frankincense is also used medicinally for treating such things as inflammation.

Frankincense is one of my favourite oils, and I use it as a catch-all. When I have a headache from allergies, I put a little frankincense on my temples, forehead, and the back of my head. If my nose feels plugged, I put a little there, too. And, if I feel sinus pressure coming on, I put frankincense right on my cheeks over the sinus area.

Thieves

Thieves essential oil is a Young Living product blend that combines these oils: clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary. Thieves has a beautiful aroma to it, and is often used to disinfectant things.

Because of this, I often diffuse thieves during the day if I feel something coming on. I enjoy the smell of it and feel better knowing I’m breathing something that may help to fight off infiltrating bacteria from allergies.
