Saturday Self-Care

I looked at my to-do list this morning and gave up on it.

This was a good thing!

We needed to work in our garden plot but it’s rainy. I had tasks to run but no car. And it was really hot in our house last night and I didn’t sleep well, so I’m tired and worn out this morning.

So, I looked at my to-do and decided to take a maintenance day for myself.

Not that these tasks aren’t important or that I won’t get to them. Just not today.

I used to get really frustrated with myself when I had a big to-do list (or even a small one) and I didn’t get every task done. That was back in the days when I didn’t understand self-care and would rather burn myself out so I felt accomplished than properly taking care of myself and realizing that life is a journey.

Self-care is important. Many people think self-care means always feeling good about yourself or never feeling stressed out or never having bad things happen.

But self-care means facing the reality of your situation and growing through it…even the bad.

My to-do list will still be there tomorrow, and probably also on Monday. But today, as I push through allergies, with my wife gone and I’m watching the kids, and while we attend to some other things around the house, self-care for me means just being with my kids and enjoying Saturday. (We started by playing Fortnite together.)

Self-care practices are vital. But the biggest practice of all is learning when to let yourself off the hook and being okay with that.

How will you spend your weekend in ways that will help you flourish?
